If you're an atheist with a poor understanding of science?

Science provides discourse and unbiased investigation. You do not need it to be an atheist but understanding how certain notions about the world are highly improbable or impossible helps to affirm beliefs you may have. History is almost equally as powerful in that respect because if you read the history of religions generally you can see where they come from and usually one religion is derived from another.
